You have identified three environmental problems while on research in Sunderbans- • Disbalance in prey-predator number) • Destruction of mangrove plants due to urbanization) • Submergence of islands due to rising sea levels Analyze what impacts they might exert on biodiversity. Write the location of the Sundaland hotspot and one important species of its biodiversity.

WB Madhyamik 2019

Ans.

Imbalance in prey-predator number:- Due to the deterioration of the balance of prey and predator, the ecosystem of Sundarbans will gradually start getting destroyed.  The cycle of mineral substances will be affected due to which the plants there will not be able to supply the food of herbivorous animals due to the imbalance of chemical substances.  Due to a lack of producers, the number of primary consumers will start decreasing, due to which the species of second consumers and third consumers will end and tigers will not be protected there.  Sundarbans will be destroyed.

Destruction of mangrove trees due to urbanization:- Destruction of mangrove trees due to urbanization will lead to loss of biodiversity.  Also, there will be soil erosion.

Submergence of islands due to rising sea level:- Due to the rise in the water level of the sea, the vegetation there will be destroyed and the species of different levels of animals there will be in danger of residential inconvenience and food.  Will end in absence.

Location of Sri Lanka’s Sundaland hotspot – Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the main species found on this island are coral reef, mangrove, etc.
