Illustration of Bengali society in the nineteenth century from the play Neeldarpan:- Neel Darpan is a famous Bengali play whose author is Deenbandhu Mitra. It was composed in 1858-59. This led to the Nile rebellion in Bengal. Neel Darpan is not only a powerful theatrical work but also an important historical document. In this play, the exploitation by the British indigo cultivators in Bengal, and the inhuman atrocities on Indian farmers have been expressed in a very emotional way. The play had a strong reaction in its way, both in Bengali society and the British ruling class. Not only this, the Reverend James Long, the pastor of the Church Missionary Society, was very moved after reading this play and he published a translation of the play in English as a protest against the exploitation by the Neelkars. This translation was done by Michael Madhusudan Dutt. This book created a stir in the whole of Britain and made them think that the way the British are oppressing innocent Bengali farmers is not justified in any way. As a result of this, the Neil Commission was established and the farmers got freedom from atrocities.
