What is meant by ‘linear expansion coefficient of copper is 17×10-⁶/°C? Why does the value remain the same even on the kelvin scale?
WB Madhyamik 2019
Ans.
“Coefficient of linear expansion of copper is 17 × 10/–⁶ °C” This means that a unit length of copper rod increases by 17 x 10–⁶ units for a unit degree rise in temperature.
- Each unit division of the absolute scale or the Kelvin scale is equal to a unit division of the Celsius scale. Therefore, the same temperature change expressed in the Celsius scale is equal to the change in temperature expressed in the Permascale. Hence, the value of the linear expansion coefficient is the same in both scales.
