Explain the causes responsible for the development of high tides and ebb.

Due to the generation of tides: – The following two forces of the moon work together on the earth in the generation of tides

  1. Gravitational Force: – According to Newton, every two bodies of this universe attract each other towards themselves. This is called gravity. This force of attraction is directly proportional to the product of the masses of the two bodies and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.  In other words, the larger the size of the two bodies, the lesser the gravity.  Due to the difference in distance from the moon, the attraction of the moon is not the same on all parts of the earth.  On the near side of the Moon, the gravitational force is greater than the center and on the far side, the gravitational force is less than the center.  Since water is liquid, the effect of gravity is greater on the water than on land.
  2. Centrifugal Force: – In response to the force of gravity, the same centrifugal force acts as that which takes the earth away from the moon. This power is the same on all parts of the earth. Thus both the gravitational and centrifugal forces of the Moon at the center of the Earth are equal.  The gravitational force of the Moon is greater than the centrifugal force on the near side of the Earth’s Moon.  Therefore, the water there gets attracted towards the moon and rises upwards.  This is called a direct tide.

In contrast, the centrifugal force on the far side of the Earth’s moon is greater than the gravitational force.  Therefore, the water there moves away from the moon and rises.  It is called indirect tide.  Thus, tides are generated at two diametrically opposite places on the earth at the same time.

At the time of the tide, the water from other parts of the earth is pulled and goes to both the places of the tide.  Therefore, at two places located between the two tidal places, the seawater goes below the normal level, due to which there is a low Ebb.
