What was the attitude of the educated Bengali Society towards the Great Revolt of 1857? [M.P. 2020]

Ans. The perception of the educated Bengali society towards the revolt of 1857: – The revolt of 1857 was largely confined to a few kings, vassals, and soldiers.  The educated class of Bengal was completely indifferent to this rebellion.  The educated Bengalis neither participated in nor supported this rebellion.  Not only this, the merchants and the educated class also prayed for the success of the British in Calcutta and Bombay.  The main reason for this apathy of the Bengali educated class towards the agitators was the violent nature of this rebellion.  This revolution never became a people’s revolution because it neglected the peasantry.  The people who took part in this rebellion were fighting against their selfishness.  The rebels were mainly supporters of the old system, while the educated class supported the modern system.  The rebels were vehemently opposed to western civilization and culture, while the Bengali educated class was a supporter of western education and they were adopting western culture.  Apart from this, the revolutionaries lost the sympathy of the general public by looting.  Professional thieves and robber prisoners came out as the rebels broke the prisons, causing chaos all around.  So educated Bengalis got angry with the rebels and did not give any support to this rebellion.
